Definition
Interpret from lectures and verbal discussions for deaf students; tutor deaf students in selected subject matter areas.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This class is distinguished from Deaf Interpreter I by the requirement to interpret more difficult and semi-technical lectures and classroom presentations. Incumbents will tutor students on an intermittent basis as required in particular courses.
Typical Work
Transmit, through sign language and mouth expression, semi-technical classroom and course work presentations; communicate to the student simultaneously what the instructor has said; transmit back to the instructor by interpretation from the students relaying responses to questions and asking questions;
Tutor students under the direction of classroom instructors; by sign language, answer their questions or assist them in course material that they are having difficulty with; provide guidance and direction on study methods;
Arrange for note-taking for deaf students; supply special note books and any other equipment needed;
Assist the instructor in providing for the deaf students the best possible environment to facilitate their learning;
Complete daily and monthly reports on classes for which interpreted; complete reports on individual student's progress;
Attend meetings and workshops in interpretation techniques and tutoring;
Perform related duties as required.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.
Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.
Desirable Qualifications
High school graduation or completion of general education development test; PLUS 13 months of experience interpreting for the deaf of which six months must have been in a classroom setting;
AND
Expressive Interpreting and/or Expressive Translating Certification through evaluation by Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Examination Requirements:
- A job element examination (including written, E & T and oral components) scored on the basis of job related experience, training, skill, ability, and other elements which are established through job analysis.
