Operates computer equipment.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Second level class of series. Fully-qualified working level. Under general supervision, performs technical tasks related to computer operations, such as setting up, adjusting, readying and operating computers and peripheral equipment.
Typical Work
Operates computers and peripheral equipment including setting up and adjusting according to operating instructions;
Prepares reports of operating records; programs and machine malfunctions along with corrective actions taken; maintains program documentation and related production backup material;
Receives, stores and maintains computer supplies inventory;
Performs minimal operational maintenance tasks such as servicing tape, disk, card, print devices and peripheral equipment;
Operates computer-related equipment such as graphic plotters, remote job entry stations;
May perform tape library functions;
May communicate with remote terminal users through computer console;
May assist in staff orientation;
May perform the duties of Information Technology – Computer Operator 1;
Perform related duties as required.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: operation, application and theory of current generation electronic computer systems, including peripheral equipment; basic understanding of operating systems and multiprogramming concepts.
Ability to: operate current generation computer systems; understand and execute operator run instructions; interpret program and machine malfunctions, make decisions and write comprehensive reports.

Desirable Qualifications
One year of full-time experience as a Information Technology - Computer Operator 1, or equivalent;
OR
Six months of experience as a Information Technology - Computer Operator 1, or equivalent and six months of applicable training;
OR
six months of experience as a Information Technology - Computer Operator 1, or equivalent and one year of experience as a Information Technology - Data Processor 1.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for the desirable qualifications listed above except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
