Definition
Under direction, design and develop architectural and/or engineering plans and cost estimates for construction or modification of institutional buildings and facilities.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Positions in this class are distinguished by responsibility for applying current construction methods, materials, codes, and practices in the development of architectural and/or engineering designs for construction and alterations of buildings and facilities.
Typical Work
Investigate and solve assigned problems related to design of alteration or repair of institutional buildings, grounds, or utilities;
Assist in project designs including examination of site, the taking of field notes, sketches, and engineering calculations; and the development of technical specifications;
As directed, inspect construction in progress to verify conformity to project plans and specifications;
Prepare estimates of cost and construction schedules for project construction;
May lead the work of drafting or engineering technicians;
Perform related duties as required.

Desirable Qualifications
Two years college or technical school training with emphasis in architecture or engineering plus two years of experience in drafting and designing related to building construction. Applicable experience as a drafting detailer, engineering assistant, or equivalent, may substitute, year-for-year, for educational requirements.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Examination Requirements:
- A job element examination (including written, E & T and oral components) scored on the basis of job related experience, training, skill, ability and other elements which are established through job analysis.
