Definition
Design and develop architectural and/or engineering plans for construction or modification of buildings and facilities.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Positions in this class are distinguished by responsibility to design and draft plans for construction. Requires specialized knowledge of architectural, mechanical, electrical or civil engineering techniques and requiring detailed application in three or more of the above mentioned areas.
Typical Work
Develop preliminary designs and cost estimates of proposed projects, including general construction or electrical, mechanical or structural considerations as they related to the budget needs of a department;
Develop project designs including preparation of field note sketches, engineering calculations, working drawings and technical specifications;
Interpret applicable codes and institutional policies and procedures as they relate to specific design problems;
Investigate expansion, alteration, or maintenance problems relating to institutional buildings, grounds, or utilities;
Lead drafting and/or engineering technicians;
Perform related duties as required.

Desirable Qualifications
Two years college or technical school training with emphasis in architectural and engineering disciplines plus four years of experience in drafting and designing related to building construction. Additional experience as an Engineering Technician 1, or equivalent, may substitute, year-for-year, for educational requirements.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Examination Requirements:
- A job element examination (including written, E & T and oral components) scored on the basis of job related experience, training, skill, ability and other elements which are established through job analysis.
