CLINICAL/MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST 2
Definition
Works as a fully qualified professional in a small laboratory or major specialized unit of a large clinical or research laboratory. Exercises expertise in development, evaluation, or performance of new or specialty procedures; and/or organizes staff and student teaching programs; and/or performs administrative functions.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This is a fully qualified professional level position, which under general direction, performs three or more of the following:
1. Exercises independent decision making with designated authority providing advice and expertise to lower level staff in the laboratory on shifts where lead and/or supervisory staff are not scheduled to work;
2. Assists supervisor in coordinating educational programs for staff and students and provides feedback to supervisor on performance;
3. Develops and/or evaluates new procedures; performs all defined specialty procedures requiring in-depth knowledge and expertise;
4. Spends 25 percent or more time performing administrative duties for assigned unit.

Typical Work
Conducts biochemical and microscopic examinations of spinal fluid, smears, blood, sputum, gastric contents, tissue and excreta; assist in autopsies; preserve, describe and catalog autopsy material;
Prepares slides of human and animal autopsy and biopsy material; prepares tissue for examination; prepares staining materials; prepares slides from sample tissues and body cells during surgical operations;
Secures specimens of blood from patients; determines blood coagulation time and sedimentation rates;
Acts as resource to Clinical Technologist 1s in quality control and troubleshooting of instruments and procedures;
Schedules orientation and training of new employees, post-doctoral fellows, residents, medical students, medical technology students, and other health care professionals; prepares teaching materials; submits written evaluation of students;
Makes solutions, prepares media and maintains growth and virulence of cultures; makes bacteriological examinations of milk, water and food products; prepares and sterilizes solutions of dextrose, saline, distilled water, metrozol and sucrose;
Uses microscope, centrifuge, autoclave, spectrophotometer, colorimeter, analytical balance, and other laboratory equipment; sharpens and polishes microtome knives;
Makes electrocardiographs, X ray and basal metabolism tests; makes and records readings of test results;
Keeps clinical laboratory records;
Washes and sterilizes laboratory glassware, pipettes and other laboratory equipment;
Inventories laboratory reagents and consumable items; submits supply orders for approval;
Utilizes statistical software;
Performs duties of Clinical/Medical Technologist 1;
May perform a wide variety of complex professional laboratory determinations.
Directs the work of others;
Performs other work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: laboratory principles, practices and techniques involving bacteriology, semiology, hematology, parasitology, histology, urinalysis, clinical microscopy, immunology, organic and biochemistry, clinical and pathological laboratory tests; laboratory equipment, supplies and reagents; report preparation.
Ability to: use laboratory equipment and techniques; sharpen and polish microtome knives; understand and follow complex written and oral directions, formulae and charts; prepare clear and concise reports; maintain cooperative working relations with others; distinguish colors; perform work with a microscope for extended periods of time; supervise professional and technical laboratory personnel.

Desirable Qualifications
A Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology with a curriculum accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation of the American Medical Association AND certification with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or equivalent, or certification in the specialized field appropriate to the laboratory division AND two years of experience as a Clinical/Medical Technologist 1 or equivalent
