MAINTENANCE LEAD TECHNICIAN, SUSPENSION BRIDGE
Definition
Distinguishing Characteristics
Typical Work
Directs and participates in assembling staging, rigging and scaffolding; sandblasting, priming and painting of steel bridge components; cutting, welding, fabrication and replacement of steel bridge components; service and repair of motorized, hydraulic and electrical equipment;
Develops daily work schedules and assigns work to crew; determines and secures materials, supplies, tools, and equipment necessary to complete scheduled work; trains Suspension Bridge Maintenance Specialists and inspects work to ensure a safe operation with adequate production;
Provides traffic control;
Assists Supervisor in preparing of monthly and quarterly work plans and accomplishment reports;
Operates, services and repairs vehicle equipment and tools; inventories tools and supplies;
Prepares and submits time and equipment reports;
Directs and participates in structural, masonry, mechanical and roadway maintenance and repair on movable span bridges;
Inspects work performed by contractors and reports findings;
Directs the work of temporary personnel assigned to bridge crew; coordinates work activities of bridge crew, contractors and other Department crews working on bridges simultaneously;
Assists Supervisor in interviewing, selection, evaluation and counseling of Bridge Maintenance and Bridge tending personnel;
Performs other work as required.
Knowledge and Abilities
Ability to: plan and direct work of crew; read and interpret engineering drawings, sketches and specifications; assemble rigging, staging and scaffolding; sandblast, prime and paint; weld, cut and fabricate; service and repair electrical, mechanical and hydraulic equipment; work from suspending rigging or confined spaces.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.
Desirable Qualifications
AND
One year as a Maintenance Specialist, Suspension Bridge or two years as a Maintenance Lead Technician, Bridge or five years of experience in bridge painting, rigging, or in the erection or maintenance of structural steel on high bridges, buildings, towers or dams.
Equivalent education/experience.
Notes:
- Must be capable of working at heights exceeding 300 feet.
- A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B and without air brakes restriction must be attained within the first six months of employment. Some positions may require the H endorsement.
