Definition
Supervises Machinists and/or directs a crew of inmates of correctional institutions, and performs skilled machinist work.
Distinguishing Characteristics
In the Department of Corrections, positions at this level directing a crew of inmates either are limited to two positions per institution or must direct crews consisting of three or more inmates.
Typical Work
Plans, lays out, directs and inspects the work of Machinists, Plant Mechanics or inmates engaged in setting up and operating lathes, shapers, planers, milling machines, grinders and drill presses to cut and shave such materials as cast iron, steel, brass, aluminum, copper, plastics and wood;
Performs skilled machinist work;
Works from detailed plans, rough sketches, samples, verbal instructions, or own judgment;
Determines most practical methods for repairing, overhauling, rebuilding and modifying mechanical equipment;
Prepares estimates of materials, personnel and tools needed to complete jobs;
Performs hand forging, heat treating, and gas and electric welding;
Performs other work as required.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Standard practices, processes, terminology and tools of machinist trade; quality, machinability and uses of metals, alloys and other materials; principles and practices of safety in machine shop work; dismantling, repair and reassembly of engines, turbines, pumps and other types of equipment and machinery.
Ability to: supervise and train other machinists, plant mechanics or inmates; use lathes, boring mills, milling machines, shapers, grinders and other machine shop equipment; do precision machine and hand work; work from blueprints, drawings, sketches and written instructions; do gas and electric welding.

Desirable Qualifications
Two years of experience as journey‑level machinist.

Equivalent education/experience.
